Innovate UK’s Innovation Loans are targeted, repayable funding aimed at UK-registered SMEs engaged in late-stage R&D with strong commercialisation potential.

Innovate UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of UK Research and Innovation, the UK’s Innovation Agency, a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Loan Criteria and Details

The focus is on innovations with clear routes to commercialisation and significant potential economic impact across future economy sectors. This is not for early feasibility or fundamental research.

They are for businesses that are credit‑constrained, unable to secure sufficient private or grant funding.

Loan amounts typically range from £100,000 to £5 million, offered on flexible, patient terms designed to bridge the gap between prototype development and commercial roll‑out.

These loans provide up to 100% of eligible project costs at below-market interest rates, with flexible repayment structures including deferred repayments and long amortisation periods.

Eligible project costs can include staff salaries, materials, software subscriptions, machinery and equipment, subcontractors (e.g. technical advisors, designers), travel, IP advice, market research, training and capital expenditure (capex‑intensive projects).

Interest rates are below‑market rates around 3.7% during project execution and the remainder thereafter

Flexible structure include draw‑down phases, interest‑only during project, then repayment period possibly up to seven years.

No personal guarantees are required. It is secured via a debenture rather than asset/collateral backing.

Its a Competition

The programme helps SMEs lacking access to private capital to scale transformative innovations. However, it should be noted that these rounds are competitions and so you are up against other projects.

The application involves selecting a relevant competition, completing a structured three-part submission, undergoing credit checks and declarations, and awaiting a decision.

Whilst this is a great tool for scaling UK innovation, it does demand careful preparation and clarity in financial and commercial planning.

It is a complex application and requires detailed financial modelling, business surveys, risk analysis and capability evidence.

There is a three-part application:

1 – Business & financial info via an online survey plus a financial spreadsheet template with historical and forecast data

2 – Project proposal detailing innovation, market potential, team, risks, delivery plan, value for money, etc

3 – Project finances, detailing eligible cost breakdowns, due diligence & declarations

A round is just about to close any day now, but another round then starts the following day. In fact rounds run several times a year.

The Dealmaker is a book I came across by accident.  I was watching a YouTube video series from Tom Hartley Jnr all about the development of their impressive new premises where they sell classic and performance cars.  I had heard of Tom Hartley Jnr’s dad, Tom Hartley...
